Public Input
We sincerely thank the members of the community that have already taken time to provide input into the project thus far. Below, please take a look at the meeting calendar, which lists the opportunities in the near future to provide input. Even further, we recognize the opportunities that our community members have already taken advantage of to provide additional input.
Meeting Calendar: Upcoming Opportunities for Public Input
- October 26, 2005: Public Presentation, held as a Special Meeting by the Development Commission to provide an update on the progress to the public and seek input from the public on the project overall, the parking plan, and the draft design guidelines. - November 8, 2005: Development Commission Meeting
- Saturday, December 10, 2005: From 9:00am to 12:00noon, the City Office of Economic Development and the New Haven Development Commission will be hosting a public Design Workshop for the Gateway Downtown Development Project. All interested members of the public are encouraged to attend to work together in teams to provide input and ideas on the project design. The design workshop will be held at 200 Orange Street in New Haven (the Hall of Records) in Room G-2 (the Ground Floor Hearing Room).
- May 16, 2006: Public Presentation, held as a Special Meeting by the Development Commission to provide an update on the progress to the public and seek input from the public on the project. The Public Presentation session will be held at 7:00pm at City Hall on the 2nd floor in Meeting Room #1.
History of Forums of Input on the Gateway Downtown Development Project
- The Development Commission held a public hearing on July 29, 2004.
- The Board of Aldermen Committee of the Whole held meetings to seek public input on this project on four separate occasions, including November 16, 2004; November 29, 2004; December 8, 2004; and January 12, 2005.
- The Office of Economic Development held meetings with several parties located in the project plan area that would be directly affected by the plan, including: the Knights of Columbus, McCormack Baron, and business owners in the designated project plan area.
- The Office of Economic Development met with community groups located in the downtown area to solicit feedback and input on the plan. These groups include the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, Town Green Special Services, the Historical Preservation Society, the Urban Design League, and several New Haven-based architects.
- The Office of Economic Development sponsored an exhibition - designed by architect Dean Sakamoto - to display the concept for the Gateway Downtown Development Project, educate the general public on the project specifics, and solicit comments from the public. At least one hundred comments were submitted, and comments were incorporated into the display in the binders in the exhibit, so the public could read the comments that others have submitted.
- The State Department of Public Works held a public scoping meeting on September 7, 2005 at the North Haven campus of Gateway Community College to seek input from the public on the project.
- The State Department of Public Works held a public scoping meeting on September 15, 2005 at the Long Wharf campus of Gateway Community College to seek input from the public on the project.
- All meetings of City bodies (e.g., Development Commission, City Plan Commission, Board of Aldermen) are open to the public.
The New Haven Development Commission
The New Haven Development Commission is the designated development agency for the City of New Haven, and is the entity that oversees the Gateway Downtown Development Project. The Development Commission meets on a monthly basis, with regular meetings scheduled for the second Tuesday of the month at 8:00am at City Hall.
