Healthy Corner Store Initiative, launched in the spring of 2011, is a collaboration between the New Haven Health Department and Yale University’s Community Alliance for Research and Engagement (C.A.R.E.) program. Through the Initiative, corner store owners are encouraged and supported in their efforts to sell more nutritious foods, such as fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy products, and healthier snacks.
Four stores, including Adam’s Deli, Clinton Food Centre, Congress Market, and the George St. Deli, were selected to participate in the initial phase of the Initiative. Stores were chosen based upon their proximity to schools and the store owner’s level of interest. Each proprietor is provided with education, support, and regular follow-up contact to ensure successful implementation. On-going evaluations are conducted to monitor the Initiative’s effectiveness. Efforts are underway to recruit additional corner stores.
Nutritious Recipe cards are available through the Initiative (English/Spanish).
