    Office Of The Mayor

(4/1/2013) (New Haven, CT)- The City of New Haven will begin accepting applications for the State of Connecticut’s Rent Rebate Program on April 15. Due to the high volume of applicants expected for this program, residents interested in applying must do so by appointment only. Walk-ins cannot be accommodated. The information below pertains to New Haven residents only. Renters from other municipalities should contact their municipality for information about the application process in their town.

The state program provides a reimbursement for Connecticut renters who are elderly or totally disabled, and whose incomes do not exceed certain limits. Persons renting an apartment or room, or living in cooperative housing or a mobile home may be eligible for this program. Rebates can be up to $900 for married couples and $700 for single persons. The rebate amount is based on a graduated income scale and the amount of rent and utility payments (excluding telephone and cable) made in the calendar year prior to the year in which the renter applies.

Unless program guidelines are changed by the State, the Rent Rebate program will be available to residents age 65 or older as of December 31, 2012, or residents at least 18 by December 31, 2012 who have been found by a government agency to be permanently and totally disabled. Income must be no more than $33,500 for single individuals or $40,900 for married couples. Individuals receiving state cash assistance are not eligible. Last year, 4,553 New Haven residents saved $2.3 million dollars through this program.

People who live in senior housing, except for River Run, may apply where they live. Look for signs about how to sign up. Those aged 55 and up who live in other housing will receive a letter in the mail with an appointment at a senior center or library. Those younger than 55 who are clients of Continuum, or Easter Seals Goodwill or the CT Mental Health Center may apply at those locations. Members of Fellowship Place may apply there, regardless of age. Look for signs about how to sign up. Other persons who qualify and who have applied in the past will get a letter with an appointment date at a branch library. Anyone else may call the Rent Rebate line after April 15 at 203-946-8550 to request an appointment.

Applications will be accepted through October 1. All checks will be mailed in October, regardless of when the application is submitted.
