NEW HAVEN POLICE PROVIDE UPDATES AND URGE PUBLIC TO COME FORWARD WITH INFORMATION RELATED TO WEEKEND FATAL HIT AND RUN

(6/8/2009) At 10:50 p.m. on Saturday June 6, 2009, officers responded to the intersection of Division and Mansfield on reports of a roll over involving an S.U.V and a Mercedes-Benz. Upon arrival, officers located an SUV on its roof atop of a parked vehicle. They located four occupants outside of the vehicle, identified as Francine L. Stanley 1/28/65, Montez Stanley, Jr. 12/20/07, Mauricia Stanley 9/18/91, and Treyana Wearing, 7/27/98. As a result of the accident Montez, a fifteen-month old baby, died and Mauricia Stanley, the mother of Montez, suffered a major spinal injury and is currently on a respirator in critical but stable condition at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a dark color Mercedes travelling north on Mansfield Street at a high rate of speed, failing to stop at the intersection of Division Street. As the Mercedes crossed the intersection it struck the S.U.V which was travelling west on Division Street. The S.U.V flipped onto its roof and collided with a parked vehicle. The Mercedes stopped just north of the intersection and the driver exited the vehicle, walked several feet from his vehicle and looked towards the flipped S.U.V. The male subject then reentered the Mercedes and continued north on Mansfield Street, fleeing from the area.

A witness also added that a second passenger exited the vehicle and ran north on Mansfield Street. Several items of evidentiary value were collected at the scene, particularly a marker plate bracket, minus the plate, was seized as part of the debris in the roadway. An inspection of this bracket revealed a part number and a Mercedes Benz logo stamped on same with a dark blue color. This was consistent with the description provided by witnesses of the offending vehicle.

Witnesses describe a dark blue or black Mercedes-Benz with dark tinted windows and unknown marker plates operated by a light skin black or dark Hispanic male with dreads pulled back. No immediate description of the fleeing passenger has been obtained.

As of this morning Detectives have positively identified the model of the Mercedes-Benz through the marker plate bracket part number as a 1998 to 2003 Mercedes Benz CLK-320 coupe, color Caprice Blue (dark blue).

Originally we received a date of birth of 12/20/08 for Montez Stanley Jr.; the correct date of birth is 12/20/07.

Currently, members of both the Motor Vehicle Accident Reconstruction Unit and the Major Crimes Unit are investigating the incident.

Anyone who may have witnessed this accident or who have information on the offending vehicle and its operator are urged to contact the New Haven Police Department @ 946-6316 or 946-6304…or they can use the Department’s Text-a-Tip line by texting the word CRIMES to 720.
