MAYOR HARP TO THANK EMPLOYEES FOR EXTRAORDINARY WINTER WEATHER RESPONSE
(4/16/2014) MAYOR HARP TO THANK CITY EMPLOYEES TONIGHT FOR EXTRAORDINARY WINTER WEATHER RESPONSE
New Haven Mayor Toni N. Harp will assemble scores of employees this evening to acknowledge the extraordinary effort they made to clear and remove snow and otherwise respond to prolonged, harsh weather this past winter and to personally thank them for that effort.
The mayor will meet with these city workers in the atrium of City Hall beginning at 6:00 p.m.; members of the press corps are invited to cover this event.
Employees of the following city departments will be included this evening: Public Works, Parks, Recreation, and Trees, Transportation, Traffic, and Parking, Livable City Initiative, Fire, Police, and Emergency Management.
The accumulation of snow this winter, the result of one storm consistently following close on the heels of another, separated only by frigid temperatures, presented logistic challenges that eventually led to declaration of a week-long snow emergency in the city, Mayor Harp said. To underscore my gratitude for the well-coordinated work of these employees in so many city departments, performed under such difficult circumstances, I decided to present an original gift to each member of the department.
The card to be presented to each worker depicts a scene created by a local artist of the beautiful sun-dial in Edgewood Park captured on a winter day. It symbolizes the tranquility of nature and also the challenge of clearing ice and snow from streets and roads for safe driving and pedestrian access. The mayor wanted to be sure to showcase a New Haven artist in the presentation; she thanked Gabriel Da Silva, Owner and Gallery Director of the Da Silva Gallery in Westville for "choreographing" the image to be presented tonight on behalf of a grateful city.
