    (10/13/2011) (New Haven) - Michael Grant, Chief of the Fire Department, today joined Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman, Mayor John DeStefano, Jr., State Representative Patricia Dillon, State Representative Roland Lemar, and Captain Matt Marcarelli, Director of Fire Training / Safety Officer to cut the ribbon on the newly renovated NHFD Fire Academy.

    “These improvements will allow not only the New Haven Fire Department but regional fire services to remain prepared and practice their skills in firefighting, rescues and EMS services,” said Chief Michael Grant. Proper training ensures the safety of our firefighters the residents of New Haven.”

    The $3,432,451 project was funded by the City of New Haven and the State of Connecticut and includes a new training support building, Class A burn building, training pavilion, and flashover simulator.

    “The skills learned and practiced at this academy will prepare firefighters to respond to a multitude of situations,” said Mayor John DeStefano. “I want to thank our state delegation for their work in securing funding to make this project possible.”

    The new 4,300 square foot Class A Burn Building is a 3-story cast-in-concrete building designed to replicate an actual house layout complete with individual rooms, attached garage, and decks. The rooms have individual windows and doors representing an actual room layout. The building also has a sloped roof prop and a flat roof prop to simulate the different types of roofs on which firefighters often find themselves working.

    Another addition to the Academy is a new trench rescue training prop. This tee-shaped reinforced concrete structure will be used to simulate the rescue of buried construction workers in an event of a trench collapse during construction. Additionally a new confined space prop, consisting of a concrete manhole and catch basin structural system complete with PVC piping, will be utilized for to train personnel in the rescuing of trapped construction workers in a confined space situation.

    Also new to the academy is a gas grill and auto pad. This heavy duty reinforced concrete pa for training fire fighters to arrest gas grill and automobile fires. New gas service was installed to this pad.
