PUERTO RICAN PARADE DETAILS ANNOUNCED
(5/15/2007) Dinner Gala to Kick-off Weekend of Puerto Rican Heritage Celebrations
NEW HAVEN- Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. and the planning committee of the Puerto Rican State Parade held a press conference Tuesday to announce for the 44th annual celebration of Puerto Rican heritage in Connecticut. This year’s events will be taking place in New Haven from June 1st through 3rd.
“It is a pleasure for New Haven to serve as the host city for the parade and related festivities again this year,” said DeStefano. “New Haven is proud to be home to a thriving Puerto Rican community that contributes to the City in so many ways. I’m looking forward particularly to the parade that is always so lively and well attended.”
The first event on the schedule for this event will be the traditional Dinner Gala which will take place Friday, June 1 at La Mirage in North Haven. On Saturday, there will be a large festival on the New Haven Green. Finally, on Sunday, the weekend will close with a parade that begins on Chapel Street.
“The parade represents the largest running Hispanic event that celebrates the Puerto Rican heritage and culture in the state of Connecticut,” said Maritza Rosa, President of the parade committee. “More importantly, it also serves as a vehicle that promotes empowerment among Hispanic communities throughout the state of Connecticut. This event has also traditionally served as a vehicle for voter registration.”
This year’s events are dedicated to the U.S. Military, particularly Puerto Ricans and individuals of other Hispanic nationalities who serve the United States. Along these lines, the parade has received support from the Hispanic American Veterans of Connecticut, Inc.
