NEW HAVEN POLICE MAKE MULTIPLE ARRESTS ON NARCOTICS, FALSE REPORTING AND CARJACKING CHARGES
(11/7/2007) NEW HAVEN- On November 6, New Haven Police officers responded to the area of 125 Humphrey Street, on a report of a carjacking. Christopher Lopez reported the carjacking to police alleging that it had occurred on Wallace Street at approximately 10:30 in the morning. Lopez, a 30-year-old New Haven resident, reported that two black males, both with handguns, took money from him and threw him into the trunk of his vehicle. During the course of the investigation, officers found inconsistencies in Lopez's account of what had transpired. When Lopez was confronted with this, he admitted to lying about the incident and stated he was never robbed. Lopez was subsequently arrested for Falsely Reporting an Incident.
Tuesday evening, members of the Statewide Narcotics Task Force, New Haven Initiative, arrested two individuals in separate incidents on narcotics-related charged. The first incident occurred in the area of Sherman and George, where 26-year-old James Pernell, of 51 Crown Street in New Haven, was arrested after members of the task force observed him engaging in a narcotics transaction. Pernell was found to be in possession of approximately 3 grams of suspected crack cocaine.
On Monday, New Haven Police Officers arrested 33-year-old Luis Montanez, of 170 Sherman Avenue in New Haven, for car-jacking a vehicle from the parking lot of Shaw's supermarket at 150 Whalley Avenue. The victim in this case, a seventy-six (76) year old male from out-of-state, was confronted by Montanez in the parking lot of Shaw's. Montanez told the victim he had a gun and demanded the victim's keys to the vehicle. Montanez took the victim's keys and knocked him to the ground fleeing in the victim's vehicle. A New Haven Police officer saw the vehicle at Chapel and the Boulevard as Montanez continued to flee. Montanez abandoned the vehicle and ran near Forest Road in West Haven, with the assistance of West Haven Police, Montanez was apprehended. Montanez was arrested for numerous felony charges. The victim received minor injuries.
Also on Monday, in the area of Sherman Avenue and George Street, 27-year-old Christopher Brown, of 300 Winthrop Avenue in New Haven, was arrested. Brown was found to be in possession of approximately 3.7 grams of suspected crack cocaine.
