    City Health Department Warns Residents of Health Risks Associated with Extreme Temperatures.

    (New Haven, CT) Due to extreme temperatures continuing throughout the region for the coming days, the City of New Haven will be activating “cooling centers” for the public in order to provide relief from the heat. If high temperatures and humidity continue after Wednesday, these “cooling centers” will remain open. Please check your local news for additional updates and the City’s website at www.cityofnewhaven.com

    Please be advised that anyone attending a cooling location should bring lunch or snacks as no food will be served at these sites. Seniors are reminded that senior centers require 24-hour advance notice for the accommodation senior meals.

    The following are cooling centers for senior citizens (open until 4:00 PM):

    • Atwater Senior Center, 26 Atwater Street

    • Dixwell/Newhallville Senior Center, 255 Goffe Street (People with wheelchairs will need assistance to help travel up ramp)

    • East Shore Senior Center, 411 Townsend Avenue

    The following are cooling centers for the general public:

    • New Haven Free Public Library Main Branch, 133 Elm Street; Open Mon-Thurs 10-8, Fri & Sat 10-5

    • Fair Haven Branch Library , 182 Grand Avenue; Open Mon & Tues 10-6, Thurs 12-8

    • Mitchell Branch Library, 37 Harrison Street; Open Mon 12-8, Wed & Thurs 10-6

    • Stetson Branch Library, 200 Dixwell Avenue (in the Dixwell Plaza); Open Mon & Tues 10-6, Wed 12-8

    • Courtland Seymour Wilson Branch Library, 303 Washington Avenue; Open Tues 12-8, Wed & Thurs 10-6

    • Clinton Avenue School, 293 Clinton Avenue; Open 4 to 8 pm through Wednesday

    • Career High School, 140 Legion Avenue; Open 4 to 8 pm through Wednesday

    • Hillhouse High School, 480 Sherman Pkwy; Open 4 to 8 pm through Wednesday

    • John Martinez, 100 James Street; Open 4 to 8 pm through Wednesday

    The following City of New Haven pools will be open to the general public from 5 pm to 8 pm:

    • Career High School, 140 Legion Avenue

    • Wilbur Cross High School, 181 Mitchell Drive

    • Hillhouse High School, 480 Sherman Pkwy

    • John Martinez School, 100 James Street

    At Lighthouse Point Park, which is free for New Haven residents, lifeguards will be on duty till 6:00 PM throughout the heat wave (park closes at 8pm). All thirteen Splash pads throughout the city are in full operation. For a map of the City’s Splash Pads, go here: http://bit.ly/11e3Unr
