    Office Of The Mayor
Major league tennis, cool jazz highlight August activities...

    Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Even as these last few weeks of summer seem to pass at an accelerated rate the City of New Haven has a robust schedule of cool jazz, exciting sports, and other activities planned to help residents fill these days and relax at night.

Headlining the immediate future is major league-level tennis competition: the Connecticut Open Presented by United Technologies will run from August 15 – 23. The Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale will host many of the world’s top-ranked women and this year, feature a two-day Men’s Legends exhibition August 20 and 21.

With all credit to tournament director Anne Worcester and her team, a variety of related events will complement the tennis competition. These include a special Military Appreciation Day, to rightfully honor the commitment and sacrifice of those men and women serving in the United States Armed Forces.

The New Haven Jazz Fest 2014 also continues this month with free, daily performances artfully sprinkled throughout the city. Jazz fans are encouraged to visit www.jazzhaven.org for more details and artist information; all residents are reminded to visit www.infonewhaven.com for a comprehensive listing of upcoming events and activities.

Finally, this reminder about special Saturday hours through August at all branches of the New Haven Free Public Library system. This additional opportunity to spend time reading, writing, listening, and learning in a cool, quiet setting is one more welcome addition to the city’s summertime landscape.

With hopes you’re enjoying the season,

    Toni N. Harp
