Easter Seals Volleyball Tournament

volleyballNew Haven Volleyball Players rose over 6 dozen teams to finish 1st place in the Advanced Division, and 2nd Place in the Intermediate Division in the first session of the Easter Seals Volleyball Tournament.

The teams are composed of players from different teams of the New Haven Volleyball League who volunteered to help promote New Haven Volleyball outside of the city. Teams Quick Sand Attack, and Red Hot partnered to climb up the ranks to finish second, in the intermediate division. Furthermore, Vanessa Rosario and Joel Montero lead their team to 1st place in the Advanced Division.

The 73 teams and 480 players helped raise over $30,000 for the Easter Seals Capital Region and Eastern Region of Connecticut. Proceeds benefit the programs and services of Easter Seals, serving the special needs of infants, children, and adults with disabilities.

“We are extremely proud of both teams. We love to hear when our players past or present and from any sport put New Haven on the map. They are not only athletes, they are well rounded individuals from our community who contribute to the growth of this city and promote a healthy lifestyle for all” says Felicia Shashinka, Supervisor, New Haven Parks and Recreation.

Volleyball team

New Haven Volleyball will also participate on the City of New Haven’s GET FIT DAY, and is also hosting a Men’s, Women’s and a Co-ed Volleyball Tournament this coming May.

Rock to Rock 2014

Only in its sixth year, the Rock to Rock Earth Day Ride has quickly grown into one of the region’s largest environmental events and fundraisers. The event itself - on Saturday, April 26th - is a day-long celebration of Earth Day and New Haven's rich environmental and cultural resources.

1500 cyclists will travel between West Rock and East Rock, with celebrations on both sides of the city. Along the way, tasty food, great music, environmental challenges and service projects, and explore the City's parks. They will travel along the Farmington Canal Trail and official city bike lanes, pass through many of the city's beautiful neighborhoods, and make stops in Edgewood and Beaver Pond Parks.

In 2014 there will be four rides: the 8-mile family-friendly ride (described above); the 20-mile ride; the 40-mile ride; and a metric century (60+ miles). At the end, at East Rock, performances by local musicians: One Way Track -- Elle Sera -- Shawn Taylor -- Wry Bread -- The Whatever Band.

The goals for 2014 are $200,000 raised and 1500 riders. All the money raised through Rock to Rock will goes directly to creating a greener, healthier community.

Birders Notes:

Spring Bird Migration in East Rock Park

Connecticut WarblerApril and May are great months to explore our City’s Parks as spring kicks in. Both Birds and flowers abound in all our natural areas, with East Rock and Edgewood Park being among the best for beauty and accessibility. Spring Bird migration in our area begins in March and continues into late May. Annually, thousands of Neo-tropical migrants pass through our region, as they wing their way north to breeding grounds in the boreal forests of Canada.

While birds can be seen in most of our parks, East Rock stands out as one of the best places in Southern New England to witness the spring migration. Recognized as an Important Birding Area, by Audubon, CT, the park’s warbler migration, brings 1000’s birders, each year, to view these small brightly colored insect-eating birds. During the month of May, over 25 species of warblers can be seen. Each week brings “waves“ of new arrivals to feed up on the bounty of insects found in our trees and along the Mill River.

I encourage you the get out to view these songbirds, before the trees leaf out, making them more difficult to see. One saving grace is that each bird species has it own unique song, if you take some time to learn their calls , it will aid you in locating and identifying hard to see birds.

The New Haven Ranger Program holds weekly Bird Walks through out the season, so check out our website calendar and our monthly newsletter.of events and joins us this spring.
