Department of Public Works begins its annual street sweeping program in April. The program is designed to remove the heavy accumulation of salt, sand and litter that has collected over the winter months and to help keep New Haven’s 226 miles of streets clean.
The City has 15 sweeping routes which have remained the same for several years. Depending on the location, there are several ways DPW ensures each street gets optimal cleaning. Be sure to read the paper postings on each of the routes and move your car accordingly.
Tag and Tow Routes – Residents must move their cars or get ticketed and towed. Paper “No Parking” postings will be done 24 hours before sweeping begins in the neighborhood. The extra postings will provide a noticeable alert. City’s emergency notification system will also remind residents who have opted into the Emergency Notification System and live in a Tag and Tow neighborhood that street sweeping is scheduled for the next day and that cars must be moved or they will be tagged and towed.
Tag and Tow Routes include:
Route # 2 - Beaver Hills
Route # 3 – Newhallville & Prospect & Grove
Route # 4 – East Rock & Cedar Hill
Route # 5 - Fair Haven(from Blatchley Ave)
Route # 8 - Wooster Square & Fair Haven (to Blatchley Ave)
Route #10 - West River & Dwight Edgewood
Route # 12 – Hill (North)
Route #13 – Hill (South) & City Point
No Tag and No Tow Routes – Though Tag and Tow doesn’t operate in the following neighborhoods, Street Sweeping will be more efficient and effective if residents can move their cars off the street. Paper “No Parking” postings will also be placed in these neighborhoods 24 hours before street sweeping begins.
No Tag and No Tow Routes include:
Route # 1 – Amity/West Rock
Route # 6 – Fair Haven Heights & Foxon
Route # 7 – Fair Haven Heights & Annex
Route # 9 – Downtown (during evening hours)
Route #11 – Westville
Route # 14 – Annex & East Shore
Route # 15 – Morris Cove & East Shore
DPW will follow this calendar schedule which is subject to change based on weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances. Additionally if time and weather permits, extra Street Sweeping will be done without Tagging and Towing cars.
Reminder: If you are going to be out of town for an extended period of time, do not leave your car parked on the street or, if you must, make arrangements with a neighbor to move it when the No Parking signs are posted.
Traffic Transportation & Parking and Police Department assist DPW’s street sweeping program. TT & P ensures the enforcement of posted signs as well as hears appeals of tickets and tows. The Police manage towers and towed vehicles.
