DPW has canceled street sweeping for Route 4 and East Rock for the month of August. Sweeping scheduled for this and next Friday will not occur. Based on our inspections, sweeping is not warranted. Please refer to the city's website for future sweeping dates.
Each Spring, the Department of Public Works (DPW) begins its annual street sweeping program. DPW crews begin sweeping outlying areas of the City in mid-March. Starting the first week of April, DPW works their way throughout all City neighborhoods and business districts, systematically cleaning all of New Haven’s 226 lane miles of roads to remove the accumulations of salt, sand and litter that have built up over the winter months.
The City has 15 sweeping routes, which remain the same as in previous years. In addition to nightly downtown sweeping, 7 routes have schedules based on permanently posted signs and 7 routes are non-posted with flexible schedules. DPW will continue to sweep the permanently posted routes on one or more of the scheduled dates. The non-posted routes will be swept on a monthly basis.
Public Works crews will “paper” post all permanently posted scheduled routes with "No Parking" signs the day before sweeping is to occur to reinforce the existing permanent signs. In addition, streets in non-posted routes may be posted with temporary No Parking signs as needed. Residents are advised to pay particular attention to these paper postings and move your vehicles accordingly. All vehicles that do not observe the posted no parking signs may be ticketed and/or towed, resulting significant expense and inconvenience.
If you are going to be out of town for an extended period of time, do not leave your car parked on the street, or if you do, make arrangements with a neighbor to move it when "No Parking" signs are posted. City ordinance does not allow for vehicles to be parked in any space for more than 72 consecutive hours (Sec. 29-35 (l))
The map provided has the schedule of permanently posted and non-posted routes and allows you to click on it to find the route and schedule for your street.
Additional tools are being developed for residents to determine their sweeping routes as well as the side of the street that is to be swept. To find the sweeping route that your street is on, please click here. To find which side of the street that is to be swept on a particular day of the month, please click here.
In all cases, street sweeping is subject to change based on that day's weather conditions and may be cancelled when safety and efficiency of operations may be compromised.
Residents and businesses can be of great help by cleaning litter from front yards, curb lines, and catch basins. This will not only assist in the street sweeping efforts but also will help prevent litter from blowing into the streets after they have been swept.
If you have any questions, please call the Department of Public Works at 946-7700.
