Tweed is one of just two FAA-certified Class I airports in Connecticut, providing both scheduled commercial and general aviation services and ranks 11th among all New England regional airports for total scheduled boardings. In 2000, the National Air Transportation Association confirmed the Airport’s commercial potential by naming Tweed as on of the “Top Most Needed” airports in the United States.
US Airways Express is currently the primary commercial service provider, offering weekday and weekend service to its Philadelphia hub. Two on-site rental car firms – Avis, and Hertz, serve the airport. Metro Taxi provides taxi service and CT Transit provides scheduled public transit.
Tweed is owned by the City of New Haven and has sustained continuous operation since its creation in 1931. The Tweed-New Haven Airport Authority assumed responsibility for its management and operation on July 1, 1997. The Authority is chartered by the State of Connecticut and governed by a 14 member Board of Directors appointed by the Mayors of New Haven and East Haven and the South Central Connecticut Regional Council of Governments.
The airport is managed on behalf of the Authority by Macquarie Aviation North America (dba AvPorts) to assume day-to-day operational responsibilities for the airport since July 1, 1998. The airport has two runways - a 5,600 foot north-south runway and a crosswind 3,626 foot runway. The main public terminal, general office and public parking areas are located on the westerly side of the airport. The Authority also subleases a portion of the airport to Robinson Aviation, which operates a general aviation facility on the easterly side.
An FAA sponsored Airport Master Plan Update, completed in 2002, sets a future direction for the overall growth of the airport. To meet this ambitious goal considerable on-airport and off-airport enhancements have been initiated, including one thousand-foot safety overruns constructed at the ends of the north-south runway, the enhancement of terminal buildings to provide a more consumer friendly environment and the re-design of parking lots to add 200 more parking spaces.
