Soldiers and Sailors Monument
Lower Bronze Work Restoration and Conservation
Conservation treatment has begun for the lower bronze work of the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, located at the summit of East Rock Park. The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument was dedicated in June 1887. The lower bronze work consists of three categories of sculpture, sculptural reliefs and honor rolls:
Four bronze sculptures:
• History (west)
• Patriotism (south)
• Victory (east)
• Prosperity (north)
Four sculptural reliefs:
• Lee Surrendering to Grant at Appomattox (southwest)
• Cornwallis Surrendering to Washington at Yorktown (southeast)
• Perry at Lake Erie (northeast)
• Scott entering Mexico City (northwest)
Two Honor Roll Text Plaques:
• Civil War Honor Roll (southeast)
• Civil War Honor Roll (northwest)
The goals of the conservation treatment are to restore the original surface appearance and placement, remove all pigeon droppings, dirt, and grime from around and behind the sculptures, restore secure anchoring to granite base, clean all bronze surfaces and restore patina, and repair cracks.
